You've probably heard of the Great Wall Of Twitter by now, why don't you take a moment and add your name to the wall?
Current Stats:
And so the madness begins.
As of 3:10pm EST on Tuesday, July 14th, there are 833,797 people following me on Twitter (@BJMendelson). If my current pattern holds, I will be the first "normal person" to reach 1,000,000 followers on the morning of August 12th (as per TweetRace).
Normal as in non-celebrity (web and real, authors and musicians), non-brand, non-media outlet.
Right now, I am following back 277,415 of those 833,797 people.
5 Steps To Our Goal Of $100,000 $200,000
Step 1: Unfollow all of the bots, spammers, and blogfeeds that I am following. Also: Any accounts that have not been active in the past six months or ones that keep pumping out "Get More Follower" messages.
Step 2: Find the regular people that I am following and see if they have a website or other way to contact them. Send a short, polite message about what I'm doing, and see if they would be interested in donating a $1 (or more) to help us build the wall.
Twitter only lets you send so many DMs per day, and I am saving those for ...
Step 3: DM everyone who has ever asked me for a favor or for a tweet, as well as people I chat with regularly, and ask them to tweet out a note with a link to the great wall of Twitter donation page.
Step 4: Once I'm done going through folks I'm following, I'll start going through the folks following me and:
1. Add the "real" people
2. If they have a website or service, email them asking if they are willing to donate a $1
Step 5: Profit! Er ... sorry. I couldn't resist the South Park reference.
(The Real) Step 5: Based on success, I will try to reach out to the press and see if we can make up whatever we're missing through folks who might be interested in joining our cause.
This might sound easy, but there are thousands of pages of Twitter followers to go through. And so, the madness begins ... right now.
Updated on July 15th, 2009: We raised the total to $200,000 to better cover production, post-production, and distribution of the documentary.
